In mainstream practice, design and execution are mediated by a project. The architectural project implies a necessary detachment of the designer from the actual place of intervention. This reality is not limited to practice; the architectural project is the accepted norm for delivering design in architecture schools. This study explores how first year students can be introduced to space-making without using the mediating force of the project. The paper follows the work of a group of students, who, instead of being presented with a design problem involving a remote site and program, are given a situation where site and program cannot be quantitavely defined but can be intimately experienced: their own studio space. |
